Well said Glen. Ironic how the culture embraces the icon of Santa and seems to hate the moralistic view of God at the same time. Further ironic too because Christmas is really about God among us (not far away… like the North Pole) and his gifts are for even naughty little boys and girls.
Perhaps it points to the desire of mankind to earn their rewards, to be worthy and good enough in themselves. Maybe we just can’t bear the fact that we can’t earn it, don’t deserve it, and can’t fill the hole in our hearts with our own resources.
Maybe most of all, as a culture, we can’t bear that we are so far from being enough that it took the humbling of God Himself.
